Recently, I was reading the SEO moz
guide which deals with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and which is very
useful for any tourism business wanting to position its site well in search
engines. So I wanted to share some of these tips here with you because very few
companies in the tourism industry know what SEO is, what the basic optimization
techniques are and why it is so important to use them. 'from a strategic point
of view.
What is SEO?
First of all, before we start,
what is SEO? The SEO or Search Engine Optimization is actually a set of
technique to optimize SEO or organic of a website on search engines . The
objective here is to position or index the site in the search engines according
to certain keywords corresponding to the main themes of the site in question.
For example, for the Hawaii tourist office, it would be a question of
positioning oneself well on keywords such as "Hawaii tourism",
"Hawaii trip", "Hawaii vacation", etc. as well as a
multitude of variants and derivatives of these keywords directly related to the
content of the site.

By natural or organic
referencing, we mean the search results which are displayed naturally by the
search engine after a query and not the sponsored links which are located most
of the time on the right of the screen. Here is an image I used in a previous
post to understand better what SEO is compared to SEM. The results framed in
red are paid links (SEM), while those appearing at the bottom come from natural
or organic referencing (SEO).
How can using SEO techniques help your tourism business to perform better?
Now that you know what SEO is, it
is essential to know how these optimization techniques can help your tourism
business to perform better according to your business objectives. What are the
benefits of investing in SEO for your business?
Knowing that 74% of Internet
users use a search engine to find their stay online we understand how the use
of SEO techniques can help you generate leads and sales on your site or simply
increase your awareness or your brand image. Indeed, according to a recent
study by Jupiter Research and the NPD Group , 70% of Internet users would only
consult the first page of search results . This percentage drops to 17% for the
second page of results, to 7% for the first 3 pages and to only 8% for 3 pages
and more. In the era where 50% of
Internet users book their trip online, we now see the importance for our site
to be positioned in the first page of results on the search engines for certain
strategic keywords that we will have previously determined using an analysis of
our site and those of the competitors.
5 SEO tips to optimize your positioning in search engines
Now let's go to 5 SEO tips to
help you better index your site in search engines. Far from being an exhaustive
guide (SEO being a fairly complex discipline and which is constantly evolving),
these 5 techniques can help you make some small changes to your site so that it
is better positioned in the engines.
Do not target the first page of
results with these techniques, because SEO techniques take time to bear fruit
and these techniques represent only a tiny part of what is possible in terms of
SEO. Hiring an SEO expert can be a very effective and profitable solution for
any business wanting to position itself well. Moreover, according to the firm marketer,
marketing managers in the United States intend to devote 19.3% of their budget
per search engine to SEO, while this percentage should increase to 22.8% in
2011. Here are the 5 SEO techniques for the structure of your website:
1. Structure your URLs correctly
It is important to structure the
URLs of your site well so that search engine robots index them faster and
easier. Indeed, if you are the Hawaii tourist office and you have 3 main
sections in your site is Explore , Learn and Plan , it is important that the URL
of each of the pages of these subcategories is well structured in according to
these categories. For example, the Hawaii Culture page is in the Explore category.
and its URL should therefore be structured to reflect this categorization.
2. Rewrite your URLs
Too often made a mistake in some
websites is to see URLs written this way: https://www.seonyc.us/ This writing
does nothing to promote the indexing of your pages in search engines. It is
best to write your URLs using your page title or very specific keywords
relevant to the content of your page such as: we understand that this is a page
on adventure activities in Hawaii and search engines will index your pages more
easily. You can use a Mod_rewrite module to optimize the writing of your URLs
easily.
3. Add content and update your site frequently
Another easy way to improve the
indexing of your pages is to update your site frequently. The more often your
site is updated, the more search engines will tend to index it to a higher
level. Indeed, the engines place more value on recent content than content that
has not been modified for a long time and that is why you gain advantage by
updating your site frequently. Having a business blog is a good way to make
sure you have recent and frequently updated content for indexing your site.
User comments and posts written on a frequent basis ensure new content for
search engines (provided you maintain your blog of course and add content!;)).
4. Avoid duplication of content
Another SEO technique to follow
is to avoid duplicating your content. Indeed, search engines penalize sites
that have duplicate content and do not yet know how to differentiate between
original content and duplicate content. It is therefore important to ensure
that your content is not reproduced in full in another place on the web or that
you do not have 2 identical pages (for example, on your old domain and your new
domain name). The Copy Scape site can also help you find duplicate content for
your website.
5. Make sure you have quality links pointing to our site
A common belief about SEO is that
the most important thing for a website is to have the highest number of links
pointing to our site in order to be well indexed by the search engines. Know
that this is false. The important thing is not the quantity of links pointing
to your site, but the quality of these links. By quality, we mean a number of
factors including the age of the domain name, the credibility of the site in
search engines, its page rank , etc. In short, be sure to make link partnerships
with quality sites that are credible with search engines and not just target
the amount of links.
